Cultural & Heritage Foundation
Foundation Name: Kwathlano Cultural & Heritage Foundation (ART 21)
Active areas: sustainable economic & social development
Geographical area: Soshanguve Township, Tshwane, South Africa
The KC & H Foundation is a registered, not for profit, Art. 21 non governmental organisation, which was founded in 1998 under the auspices of Mrs Lindie Stiehler.
Whilst in the employment of Kwathlano Tours and Safaris as a professional tour guide, Mrs Stiehler was exposed to the needs of the children on the guided township tours undertaken by international visitors. She identified a need for corporate involvement to uplift the social circumstances and Kwathlano Tours & Safaris offered to become involved through the forming of the formal foundation body.
The foundation endeavours to channel international and local donor funds to pre-selected township projects to provide sustained assistance within the Soshanguve community. The Kutung Primary School and Itoseng Day Care Centre have been two such pre-selected projects.
MISSION STATEMENT
To motivate, support and nurture the children of the Kutung Primary School and Itoseng Day Care Centre in Soshanguve, northwest of Pretoria, through the channeling of financial support and the facilitation of HIV/Aids education and loss support.
FOUNDATION VISION
Kwathlano Tours and Safaris is an active member of the South African tourism industry and, through the KC & H Foundation, plays an integral part in facilitating and implementing projects that empower children from previously disadvantaged communities to improve and sustain their lives in order to create a positive future.
The KC & H Foundation places emphasis on creative, innovative and participatory initiatives that will have potential to change the ways in which western society at large perceives and responds to the needs of children in impoverished communities.
OPERATING PRINCIPLES OF THE KC & H FOUNDATION
In line with the vision & mission statement, the foundation aims to implement it’s supportive & developmental role in the community through the following principles:
- Tourism Awareness
Tourists that are brought to the township for tours, facilitated by Kwathlano Tours & Safaris, will visit the Kutung Primary School and Itoseng Day Care centre and be offered a first hand opportunity to contribute to the facilities through identified projects.
- Sustainability
All proposed upliftment projects must be sustainable within the community, taking into account the financing and implementation thereof.
- Skills transfers
To support sustainability, project managers will be trained to provide them with the necessary skills to grow and serve the school and crèche.
- School and crèche awareness
The KC & H Foundation can only support the community if it knows what they truly need. To this end we are glad to report that we work together with an enthusiastic and supportive teacher body that assist in identifying key areas for development.
- Financial accountability
The Foundation is audited annually as trust funds are generated through various efforts and received from an array of sources, who sometimes earmark their donations for a particular project.
- Administrative costs
Through the active involvement of the trustees, the Foundation endeavours to minimize administration costs in order to maximize the final benefit to the community.
